Design Faves: New Wellspring of Inspiration for Designers

In the design world nothing gets created without the initial spark of inspiration. Sometimes you as a designer sit down and inspiration is all around you. Most of the time it’s not. To make it through these hard times, all of us have a bunch of bookmarks at hand, with sites focusing on getting the ideas flowing. Now the makers of WebDesigner Depot, Mighty Deals, Techi and Brushlovers have entered the scene with their inspiration-dedicated and in itself beautiful website Design Faves. Let’s have a look…

Diogene

How about this for an energy efficient, self-contained studio space?

Diogene

“This little house is the final result of a long, long journey partially driven by desires and dreams, but also by technicality and a scientific approach.”
— RENZO PIANO

Diogene

Designed by Renzo Piano, the front part serves as a living room — on one side, there’s a pull-out sofa; on the other, a folding table under the window. Behind a partition, there’s a shower and toilet as well as a kitchen, reduced to the necessary.

Water is collected by the house itself, cleaned and reused, and the house supplies its own power.

Diogene

The building is named after the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope who is said to have lived in a barrel because he considered worldly luxuries to be superfluous.

Diogene

The current model is the latest stage of prototyping, with Art Basel 2013 being used as a testing period to inform the design’s development.

CSS Architectures #1: Principles of Code Cleanup and the New Best Practices

Box-Models in Real Life Can Come Over Complicated, too

All too often, the CSS for major (and minor) websites is a textbook case of code bloat and redundancy, with lines of code that boast unnecessary use of qualifier elements, overly specific selectors from unnecessarily long selector chains, overdependence on descendent selectors when other selectors would be more appropriate, and the inappropriate or unnecessary use of !important. We'll show you better ways in the following article...

SODAE house

From time to time I like to share homes that capture my imagination. This is one of those.

SODAE Casa

“In a nature area between Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, lies the Kostverlorenkade 1; an island measuring 1200m2. Here, VMX built a 500m2 house. The starting point for the concept was the perception of the landscape, the distant high buildings of the Zuid As and the Rembrandt Tower as well as the view of the aeroplanes travelling to and from Schiphol.”

Crossing Over: Showcase of Inspired Bridge Photography

Both architecturally and metaphorically speaking, bridges are such amazing structures. Representing an unstoppable desire to move forward and crossover what gaps lay before us, they stand as sturdy testaments to our ability to solve problems. Also demonstrating our resolve to create shortcuts where needed. So they can stand for so much, as they cross over whatever impassable (or passable) terrain lay below them. This could be why they are so often featured or the focus of photographs.

Bridge photography is such a vibrant and breathtaking area of this art, and not just because of the underlying metaphors that can so easily be written in the words spoken by the picture. But also because of the marvelous structures themselves. These earth and metal made installations do much more than allow us access from point A to point B, they inspire and connect us. Which is what we are hoping they will do for you today. Below is a showcase of inspired bridge photography that is sure to get your creative gears turning.

Moses bridge at Fort de Roovere

This sunken bridge at Netherlands’ Fort de Roovere has been getting a lot of press recently.

Sunken foot bridge

Sunken foot bridge

Sunken foot bridge

Sunken foot bridge

“The West Brabant Water Line is a defense-line consisting of a series of fortresses and cities with inundation areas in the south-west of the Netherlands. It dates from the 17th century but fell into disrepair in the 19th century. When the water line was finally restored, an access bridge across the the moat of one of the fortresses, Fort de Roovere, was needed. This fort now has a new, recreational function and lies on several routes for cycling and hiking.

“It is, of course, highly improper to build bridges across the moats of defense works, especially on the side of the fortress the enemy was expected to appear on. That’s why we designed an invisible bridge. Its construction is entirely made of wood, waterproofed with EPDM foil. The bridge lies like a trench in the fortress and the moat, shaped to blend in with the outlines of the landscape.

“The bridge can’t be seen from a distance because the ground and the water come all the way up to its edge. When you get closer, the fortress opens up to you through a narrow trench. You can then walk up to its gates like Moses on the water.”

Unusual and Bizarre Building Designs

Architecture is known to be the art and science of designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures with the help of a person or a computer — principally to provide shelter. In the late 20th century, different new concepts were incorporated in the area of both structure and function. This is the reason why we nowadays cannot design a building without first keeping the future in our minds.

Below we present to you the most bizarre yet fantastic architectural masterpieces of the modern world. Feel free to share with us other creative buildings in case we’ve missed them.

Architectural Projection Mapping the future of motion graphics?

If you’ve gotten bored with traditional motion graphics and haven’t quite gotten into 3D movies yet you’re in luck. Architectural projection mapping is here and ready to boggle your mind. The idea is that you project a 3D object onto a 2D surface. Like the facade of a building. This makes for some large scale creativity and makes buildings come to life or collapse in front of your eyes. This could begin to get very interesting as technology progresses in the future… There could be all kinds of uses for architectural projection or it could be directly projected on people! Imagine someone walking around the street and buildings move and bend to try and get prospective customers to enter to check out their merchandise. Here are some awesome examples of where Architectural Projection Mapping is now… Could you see design crossing into this medium?

Hirzberger Events – Digital Wallpaper

Once in a while it is nice to not work on a commercial project and have the freedom of doing whatever you want. Fortunately the people at Büro Hirzberger hirzbergerevents.com were totally open to whatever we presented them to decorate parts of their office space in Vienna.  My fellow co-workers at Strukt Design Studio strukt.com came up with this digital wallpaper, using 2 projectors to map an entire wall and using VVVV to do the deskewing and to generate the content. Many thanks go to the great guys at Concept Solutions derigel.at to provide us the equipment for the test set-up.

On the site of a thousand years of violent history, ACDC were pitted against Iron Man in a ground breaking architectural projection mapping project. The front facade of the Great Keep at Rochester Castle, was brought to life using the latest in 3D animation techniques. This onslaught of the senses, saw the castle confront it’s ultimate challenge. Warping, morphing, spewing and collapsing before the audiences eyes. Let there be rock!

Amazing Executions of Lundberg Architecture Design

LundbergDesignLundberg Architecture Design has some serious talent, skill & superior execution. They are a group of creative minds that aren’t afraid to custom fab anything and everything they can get their hands on. Their interiors are stunning & exteriors are equally intriguing. Their philosophy says it all:

Good design is always personal, and it is often the little touches that impart the unique character of a building. While there is great variety in the work we have done, there are recurring themes that define it as ours.

We like materials that age well, that develop character over time. We look for variations in texture, both visual and tactile, and feel that buildings should have surfaces that beg to be touched.
