COLOURlikers: There's Just Too Much Love!

When I first started this site 7 years ago, it was a quick and easy decision to call it COLOURlovers: It was all about color for people who loved it. But now with 1.5M members from around the world who have loved, err, liked more than 10,000,000 pieces of shared content... I think we can all agree, that's just too much love!

It's also worth noting that in the current state of the world with ongoing wars, political tension, financial implosions... What the world really doesn't need is more love. That's why I'm super excited to share with you the new & waaaay better COLOURlikers!

It's just like the old COLOURlovers, but now without any of the love. What has love every done anyway?! You're all probably used to liking things on Facebook anyway, so this should be an easy transition.

Start Sharing the Like!

So go check out the profiles of other likers. Go like some palettes or patterns. Share the like!

Don't worry, we're kidding. Happy April Fools. We still love you.

Remembering & Honoring a Friend: Sunmeadow

Life is a fragile thing and it always hurts the heart when somebody passes well before their time. We're deeply saddened by the loss of one of our active, loving, creative & supportive members; sunmeadow. She leaves many friends here in our community and we're incredibly honored to have the privilege to continue hosting & sharing her creations with the world. We may have 1.5 million members now, but every single one is important to me and is greatly appreciated. We love you sunmeadow and thank you for all you shared with us and all the inspiration you will continue to share.

A close friend of hers let me know of the sad news. They also noted that she was a very private person and that she would appreciate her personal details not be shared here. I will respect her wishes and ask you to do the same.

Her last palette randomly created was entitled "Wings To Fly" and I believe she has them now. I can't possibly honor all that she shared here with us in one post, but I'll share some of her most popular creations below... and please feel free to share yours in the comments.

Lover Feature: Designer, Shawna Crouch aka "sec9586"

Some of you may already know our own sec9586, some of you may have just heard of her as the designer of the Betabrand plaid pattern, "Betabrand2" in our contest, "Color a Plaid Shirt Contest by Betabrand + COLOURlovers". Either way, we're featuring her today so you can get to know her even better!

Shawna Crouch, aka "sec9586", is the owner / operator of CrouchDesign. She attended Murray State University, where she graduated with a BS in Studio Art/Graphic Design in 2009, and specializes primarily in print design. Along with her designing day job, she runs a small shop on Zazzle as CrouchDesign, where she offers freelance design services. She also has an Etsy shop,  AquaNetNightmare, set to reopen September 1st, 2011 which will offer jewelry, cards, invitations, stationary and drawings.

Monster11Monster3TeenyBop
Shawna continually uses COLOURlovers in every which way for both work and fun. Let's take a peek at how she does it...

Using COLOURlovers in Daily Design

COLOURlovers: How do you specifically use COLOURlovers.com tools to work with a client in getting a perfect color palette?

Shawna: The first thing I do is to ask them what type of look they are going for. In doing so, I sometimes ask them what their favorite restaurant or hotel is, which can sometimes help show me an example of the style they like. After a preliminary discussion of their style, I direct them to COLOURlovers.com and ask them to choose three color palettes they’d like me to work with. From that point, I can design a pattern in Seamless, work on the mock-up and work with them to get a design that they were imagining.

Sunday_Persimmon
COLOURlovers: How exactly do you get clients to send you palettes to use?

Shawna: Usually I have clients email me links to the palettes, OR I have them download the AI or ASE swatch files (to email me) - depending on which is easier for them. Everytime that I have had them do this, it has gone very smoothly. Usually only issue being that they send more than three palettes because there are just so many wonderful color combinations to choose from. Then we get to play the elimination game, which can be a daunting task in itself!

COLOURlovers: What COLOURlovers tools do you use specifically, and how?

Shawna: When I use COLOURlovers.com, I almost always use COPASO to create my palettes. COPASO allows you to make palettes with custom widths, but I mainly use it for the simple fact that I can use photos to pick colors from and use a scratch area to keep all my ideas organized.

Since I've just gotten the COLOURlovers iPhone App, ColorSchemer, I'm really looking forward to utilizing it in every day work. Being able to access and creating palettes on the fly will be an amazing tool. I imagine having a client sitting right with me saying, “Hmm, I need to see some color options for our company’s new look”. All I'll have to do is pull up the app and create the palette on the spot! It will definitely speed up this part of the process.

COLOURlovers: I know you've also recently got a copy of Seamless Studio. Do you use patterns a lot in your work already? If so, how will having a copy of SS on your desktop help out?

Shawna: I do try to use patterns in my work, because they can add subtle qualities that make a design much more interesting. Using the website is awesome because I can tailor the pattern templates to my needs, and then color several very quickly. It’s also exciting to find hidden gems among other users that create amazing templates.

Cleanest_BathroomDiner

Seamless Studio expands the limitations of making the templates in so many new directions. I have a lot more control over what shapes are in the pattern and better yet, getting the colors exactly how I like them for the big picture.

Lovely_BirdsBird_Ornate
Being able to create organic shapes makes it so much more fulfilling to use the software and website to my full potential as a designer.

I find it fascinating to see how our community uses COLOURlovers for both work and play and We have so many unique freelancers and small business owners. I'll be on the lookout for more Lovers to showcase here on the blog.

So how do you use COLOURlovers?

Seamless Studio for Mac/PC ~ Pattern Power!

What we love more than anything is helping people share their ideas & inspirations. A couple years ago we added the ability for members to color in 100 preset pattern templates and we saw your creativity flourish, but we also saw an even greater opportunity... To give you all the power to design your own pattern templates!

And without being able to save your work, import your own custom shapes, work only in grayscale... and with only our simple web version of Seamless, in the past 12 months our awesome members created more than 80,000 original seamless patterns.

So it's with great excitement for the amazing creations that will be shared that we release the more powerful desktop version of Seamless Studio!

Special COLOURlovers Member Price

And as a special thank you to all our supportive members here at COLOURlovers, we're giving you a $20 discount on the regular price of $49, just for being a member. Thanks for Sharing the Love!

A Showcase of Amazing Seamless Patterns

It truly is magical what you all are able to create using simple shapes and only 5 colors... Check out the Showcase to see some examples of the wonderful patterns being created with Seamless Studio. Or check it out for yourself, Download a FREE 15 Day Trial of Seamless Studio...

Beautiful, Easy to Use & Affordable

Existing pattern design tools & software were expensive, hard to use & not much fun to play with. So as part of our mission to make design super easy and accessible to everyone, we made a beautiful, user friendly & affordable vector pattern design app. These are just some of the features we packed into Seamless Studio:

Import Custom Shapes
Open SVGs from other editors to use in your patterns.

Export to Other Formats
Save your pattern as a SVG, PNG, or JPG image.

Layers / Groups
Organize and rearrange shapes simply.

Save / Open
Create projects and come back to them later.

Easy Upload
Upload your patterns straight to COLOURlovers.com.

Line Tool
Create wavy, sawtooth, straight, dashed, and dotted lines.

Infinitely Scalable
Export SVGs that scale beautifully to any resolution.

Start Sharing Your Patterns with the World!

Not only can you publish your patterns right to COLOURlovers.com from the app, you can also export your patterns as high res files to use in your own creative projects. Upload them to Spoonflower to get custom fabric! Print them out and sell them as part of a craft pack on Etsy! Turn a pattern into beautiful wall art with Imagekind! ...Woohoo!

A Book of Color Inspirations: 3,000 Innovative Palettes from the COLOURlovers Community

Ever since the first palettes were shared on COLOURlovers I've wanted to see their awesomeness in print... And a few years ago I got in contact with the fine folks at HOW books who also wanted to help make it happen. We're stoked and honored to be able to share 3,000 amazing color palettes from our community in a printed book with readers in real life.

Color Inspirations is on Pre-order at Amazon. Check it out!

Palette Galleries

3,000 palettes to be exact have been selected and organized by hue into a printed inspiration gallery. Each palette proudly displaying its name as well as the name of the member who created it and the HEX, RGB & CMYK values for the colors in the palette. The index of the book has each palette name, creator and a link to its page here on COLOURlovers... so new offline lovers can connect to the community online.

Inspiration & Information

Along with the 3,000 color palettes there are 10 inspirational and informational color articles.
Thanks to Dave, our long time blog writer, for help putting it all together!

A Who's Who of Awesome Palette Makers!

We gathered the palettes for Color Inspirations 2 years ago, so unfortunately we're missing some of our wonderful new members creations in the book... but we still managed to share 1,000+ member's palettes. We've been honored to showcase your work here on COLOURlovers and give you some recognition in the physical world too!. All the members who have a palette in the book are listed below:

A Note on Palette Sourcing

Before we had a chance to announce the book, some members found it and posted some concerns about how we sourced the palettes. Members were also surprised it had never been mentioned... Our bad. We should have done a better job keeping you all informed. [discussion here]
As for rights, no worries. You still own the rights to all the creations you share here on COLOURlovers, but you also extend us the right to share your work commercially, like here on this website and in promotional projects like this book.

Group Feature: HAIKU- Where Poets Create with Colors and Words

Of the many word-based games played on ColourLovers, one of the newest is HAIKU PALETTES & POETIC PATTERNS where Lovers create palettes and poems at the same time from the words in the color names. The group began in January 2011 and quickly grew to 20 members in its first few days. Membership has more than doubled in less than the three to four months since the group was launched.

April is National Poetry Month - A note from the editor

The month of April has many national celebrations, one of those being National Poetry Month. Before we draw this month to a close, we want to feature one of our most recent, popular groups, the HPP, managed by ketisse, a COLOURlover who is very passionate about writing and poetry. I personally think that it is amazing how she has invented a way for COLOURlovers to work with color, pattern and palettes to create poetry - the process is truly intriguing!

Today, the group currently boasts:

  • 178 COLORS
  • 179 PALETTES
  • 184 PATTERNS
  • 67 LOVERS

I hope you enjoy learning about the group itself and learning how to create a Haiku through palettes. ketisse has put together a very through guest post about her group and the creation process.

- Molly Bermea / Community Curator & Blog Editor

Creating Haiku's Using Color

A Haiku is created by combining colors while arranging the color names so they compose a poem.

The HAIKU Palettes and Poetic Patterns Group (HPP) challenges its members to be creative in two very different ways simultaneously:

  1. 1.) Combining colors while arranging the color names so they compose a poem.
  2. 2.) Working with words and colors this way can be a worthwhile exercise that helps expand personal creative horizons.

When making a palette or pattern, an artist can choose from every possible color available in the COLOURlovers' system, which can seem overwhelming. If you stick to the word games in the HPP Group Conversations, it might help you narrow your options and focus and sets a challenge to meet.

When you first enter the group, only five Conversations show, make sure you open up all of them. For instance there are only 5 of 13 Conversations showing (as of today), you'll find many other challenges if you view ALL 13 Conversations. With new challenge types, will come a new Conversation thread.

Haiku group discussions are distinguished by who names the colors.

It seems to be more of an advanced challenge if the haiku palette/poem was created using colors named by other COLOURlovers, than if the colors were named by the palette maker to complete the haiku palette. Some palette poems can be made up from a mixture of self-made colors and existing colors, these would be moderate to intermediate challenges.

"Crossovers" - palettes that qualify for two or more groups

This is where “crossovers” came in to play. These are palettes that qualify for two or more groups. The One-Lover at a Time (1LP) palette challenge was the first to be combined with Haiku for a crossover challenge. Periodically, a COLOURlover who has a lot of colors with English names is announced to the group and the palette/poets who accept the challenge use only that person’s color names to create a poem palette.
Crossover Palette Example / 1LP (One Lover Palette): notice all the color swatches are made from one COLOURlover.

Reading a COLOURlover Created Haiku

When viewing a HAIKU Palette, some may LOVE the palette after viewing only the color combinations. Unfortunately, viewers can move on without reading the color names and miss all the beauty in the artist’s poetic work. So, in group discussion threads, most palettes are presented in a way that allows viewers to appreciate the poems and the colors simultaneously. Of course, reading the color names of most HPP palettes is the same as reading a poem.

Shown below is an example by Donna Brock, aka COLOURlover: sunmeadow

Notice the correlation between the poem and the names of the colors swatches used in the poem.

HAIKU Poetry Café - Watch & Listen

Hidden inside this group, is the HAIKU Poetry Café. This is where ColourLovers can sit back, relax and enjoy some poetry performances by some very entertaining spoken word artists recorded in their own voices. Palettes inspired from this discussion do not have to be Haiku poems. The performance videos are chosen because of their powerful messages as well as their potential appeal to all audiences. For instance, some of the artists featured in the February series, for Black History Month, included Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Tupac Shakur and Jill Scott.

Dawning_Prospect

I liked how Trixxie also incorporated a pattern describing parts of the poem's points, being a phenomenal woman, in patterns with the same color palette (see below).

Making a Haiku yourself

Haiku poems have 17 syllables arranged in three lines with five [5] syllables on the first line, seven [7] syllables on the second line and five [5] syllables on the third line.

Because most COLOURlover palettes contain five colors and because the palette-poet must combine phrases found in color names written by others, the syllables may be spread over those five lines in any combination that totals seventeen. If a poem-palette doesn’t have 17 syllables, it is still a poem, even if it isn’t a HAIKU.

First, open MS Word, Pages or a notepad program, where notes and lists of color names can be saved outside of the CL system. A paper notebook, sticky notes and a pen or pencil can be used for this step, too.

Second, start searching for colors to use for your Haiku. When searching for existing color names, the poem might need to be edited if phrases from the poem don’t exist in the COLOURlovers system. To compare colors, consider opening a separate browser window/tab for colors that represent each idea.

Dissecting the Process...

For those who are ready to make a Haiku palette, but have never written a Haiku before, here is a glimpse into the creation of a recent One-Lover poem-palette: “INDECENCY” - made using colors named by ycc2106.

Indecency_HPP_1LP

The color search for Inecency HPP 1LP began with using the word "SEA". Color names appeared in the search and ideas came to mind. The next searches were for words like WATER, FISH and SWIM, etc. Funny thing, “SEA” didn't even end up in the finished poem, but it led to the color names that did.

Each color name that had potential went onto a list on the notepad. If a color name contained a color word, it was skipped because most color names evoke an idea of color without actual color words. With a 17 syllable limit, color names that suggest colors are more expressively efficient (a good thing).

To develop the story of the poem, these questions came to mind:

  • Who would be in this water?
  • What would happen there?

The color name search was shaped by these questions. YCC2106 had written two color names "ARROGANT MOON FISH" and “SWIM NAKED”. These color names answered those questions.

Arrogant_Moon_FishSwim_Naked

The word "arrogant" evokes an emotional reaction; the "moon" part took on a double-meaning when added to “swim naked”. These were the first to be added to the poem. The paradoxical, oxymoronic color name: “WISE FROGS” was already on the notepad but not in the poem yet. The idea of “WISE FROGS” seemed to be the perfect foil or opponent for the “arrogant moon fish” and went well with “DON’T KNOW WHY”. The poem was almost finished.

To fill the remaining syllables, the word EMBARRASS seemed appropriate at this point. YCC2106 had one color name: “EMBARRASSINGLY” but with five syllables, this took the poem to 18 syllables (one too many for a HAIKU). A search on “CONFUSED” revealed “CONFUSED AS HELL”. With four syllables, this completed the poem perfectly. Placed intentionally between the "moon fish" and the "wise frogs", "confused as hell" can apply to either. Let the reader choose.

Here is the finished poem-palette (with syllable counts next to each line):

INDECENCY HPP 1LP

  • (5) Arrogant moon fish
  • (3) Swim naked
  • (4) Confused as hell
  • (2) Wise frogs
  • (3) Don’t know why

Dont_Know_Why

When you go to this palette, Indecency HPP 1LP, take a look at the comments (both pages). It's fun to see the reaction from a COLOURlover when you use all of their color names in a Haiku.

The creative process can vary, COLOURlovers who are members of the HAIKU PALETTES & POETIC PATTERNS GROUP, put a lot of time and effort into their poem-palettes. You may view other HPP palettes here (by searching "HPP" under Palettes).

The New Grand Vision for COLOURlovers: Grays

Probably one of the most common criticisms we hear at COLOURlovers is "OMG, there are just so many wonderful colors to love!!!" and in an effort to help you find the perfect colors, we're making it easier by limiting the number of colors from 16 Million to 256 Shades of Gray. Don't worry though, there are still tens of thousands of combinations of grays that can be made into awesome palettes.

Helpful New Color Wheel

The below color wheel will help you use the new COLOURlovers site with all its wonderful gray colors.

Gray: A Huge Energy Saver

As a growing company we also have to think about costs... and displaying 16 Million colors cost a lot more money than displaying 256 shades of gray. With the huge amount of savings we'll make, we'll be able to hire more developers to build some awesome new features we have planned, like 1 color palettes. If you didn't know... the way computer screens make colors is to add light. And light is color.

One of the key arguments in favor of black screens is a 2002 research study produced by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory entitled "Energy Use and Power Levels in New Monitors and Personal Computers." The report indicates that "a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Indeed, that study reports that black screens consistently require less energy than white screens, regardless of whether the monitor is a CRT or LCD.

MEMBERlove: Wordlinks Color Game

Have you ever seen a [w] tag in a palette's name and wonder what is was? It's wordlinks, a fantastic game and creative exercise! Take a look at the description by praxicalidocious in the latest recruitment post for the game:

There is a delightful game here on CL, so delightful, in fact, that it has it's own dedicated group, wordlinks. (You might have seen a [w] palette tag, and wondered what it meant.)

Wordlinks are palettes where each colour is a part of a 'chain'; the name of each colour begins with the last word of the previous colour. Like so, since I can let badges do all the work:

[w]_Whisked_Her_Awaycreamed_brown_darkdark_apricotApricot_BlushBlushing_Bridebride_of_the_wind

...You see? (If you're more ambitious, and are lucky with the first colour (which is always the last colour from the previous palette in the chain; please try to keep this in mind when choosing your own final colour, to allow others a good starting point), the power of the word doubling lends tremendous dramatic weight to your 'scenelets'. (In [w], irony is always delicious!)

It's actually a lot easier than it looks, especially once you get the hang of the process. (I usually have two browser windows (not tabs, you'll want to see both at once) open, and notepad. One window has COPASO (or basic, if you prefer, though you'll lose the all-important 'scratch' function); the other has a search window for colours. ...I use notepad to keep track of the colour names.)

And then let loose. :) Posting guidelines ( see top of post for the link to the group) are simply that you post your palette badge, and the badge of the final colour. (A good title can be key to drawing attention to the theme of the wordlink.) ...Then sit back and watch the loves come in! Here are some examples to further whet your appetite:

[w]_Anti-itch_Cream cashmere_blanket blanket_of_roses roses_itch itchy_skin skin_cream

[w]_Unstoppable with_light light_curve Curve_Resistance Resistance_Gray Gray_Grind

[w]_ASPCA_Emergency less_a_feeling feeling_amorous Amorous_Toying Toying_with_me Me_and_My_Monkey

[w]_Boat_trip Assholes_Invasion Invasion_Of_The_Dull Dull_Uranium_Glass glass_bottomed_boat Boat_Trip

I hope that you enjoy the game as much as I do; I find that I feel very 'close' to the [w] palettes I've made. ...It is only fair I warn you though; once you've been bitten by the [w]monkey, there's no escape. :)Please come play a round with us! I would be only too happy to answer any questions, so please don't hesitate to ask. :)

Yours in Love & Colour,
Prax

Color Barcode Generator & Gallery

Pay homage to Color Master Gene Davis and join the color experimentation with the Color Barcode Multiblend Generator created by sero* (codename: cuttlefish).

I've been tinkering with the 99 palette generator for the last several months, and it's ready for a v2 release. It now supports widths, hue options, any number of palettes (1-99), and an offset parameter so we can narrow into any set of palettes we want. Think of it as a timeline, the offset is how many palettes back from present time you want to go.

Here is a gallery of some of the most beautiful pieces I've found so far. If you find a beautiful set, please post a link here. I know there are tons of beautiful multiblends and compositions out there waiting.  Cheers, sero*

The Absolutely Scariest Colors Imaginable

For most people, color is basic element of our daily lives that we use for comfort, inspiration, practicality, etc. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, phobias and irrational fears affect approximately 10% of adults. Some of those phobias relate to colors being the most terrifying thing imaginable... for those poor people, this color loving website would probably be hell-incarnate. Here are several color phobias and some of color associations with common and strange phobias.

Chromatophobia - The fear of colors.

Chromatophobia - The fear of colors.

Chromatophobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of colors. Like most fears and phobias, the fear of color is created by the subconscious mind as a protective reaction. It was likely an emotionally traumatic event in ones past that was linked to colors in general or a specific color. Because the association of colors to that traumatic event is so strong, when subjected to colors later in life the unconscious mind brings up terrible feelings. The phobia affects people in different ways, with some experiencing the suffering all the time and others just to direct stimuli.

Halloween Colors & Symbolism

 Halloween jack-o-lantern

Probably the most well known symbol of Halloween is the carved pumpkin, or jack-o-lantern. The tradition of carving a lantern comes from the Irish who used potatoes and turnips, but was modified to use the pumpkin in the US where it was available.

HOW TO QUICKLY COMBINE PATTERN + PALETTE
For example let's combine the palette and pattern below
Man_Brigade New_Nikes

First of all you need to have your browser's address bar visible. (also called location bar or URL bar ) How? Each browser is a little different so you'll need to Google it with the name of your browser.

On the pattern page, below the pattern, click on 'create pattern' - You'll get the following URL - notice the patternID at the end

www.colourlovers.com/patterns/add?patternDefinitionID=23941

real example

On the palette page, click on 'create pattern' - You'll get the following URL with all the colors are listed in HEX code

www.colourlovers.com/patterns/add? colors=06070B,136982,6D6E8D,662126,484B78&pID=1273152

All on one line - real example

To combine them, all you have to do is add up the 2 endings, link them with a '&' like in the example just below

www.colourlovers.com/patterns/add? colors=06070B,136982,6D6E8D,662126,484B78&pID=1273152 &patternDefinitionID=23941

All on one line - example

Screenshot - Click to view in big
Click image to view in big

Once you have the palette code and pattern code in the address bar like in the above screenshot, press the keyboard [ENTER] key or the 'Go' button by the address bar to validate.

In simple, all you do is add the patternID string &patternDefinitionID=23941 (that you went to fetch earlier) at the end of the palette URL

Voilà! Simple! =)

PS: I think the pID=1273152 is for CL engine to get the palette name and add it to the description

Questions

Using COLOURlovers for Food Photogrpaphy?

I'm new to Colorlouvers. How can I use this site in my food photography work? Luv any thoughts!

You might want to check out some Japanese Hand-colored Photos then pick a palette and use those colors to color a photo. I know that's not food related but it sounds like fun to me. For food photography, I think COLOURlovers could be helpful if you ever run into a situation when you ask yourself:  "Is the color of that tomato not quite appetizing?" If ever you do, I think you could find the perfect red in the library, and add a little color life into the image.

What does everyone else think? Have any suggestions for michellee1? Let her know in the Forum.

International Color Usage?

The other day I stumbled across a graph that represented international color usage by country. But now, I seem to have lost the link. Have any of you colorlovers seen this or something like it?

Well, if you could settle for Colors of the Social World Wide Web we could help you out. An interesting subject, no doubt; a link I'm sure we would all love to see. Are we talking total usage of colors across every use of color: web, print, coloring book pages, etc? Doubt anyone has the info to graph that one out. But any international comparison of color is definitely interesting.

Has anyone seen any comparisons around?
