Web Throwback: Showcase of Vintage and Retro Web Design

Given the popularity of vintage and retro styles among the web design community, we thought we would take an opportunity and shine a spotlight on some of those styles applied to websites. With so many flawless examples of vintage and retro web design floating around the internet it was a bit difficult to narrow down the search, but we think we found some inspired designs that have not already hit everyone’s radar, and maybe one or two that have.

So take a look below at the showcase we have prepared for you and see how some talented designers have brought the past to life on the web today.

Web Throwback

Forefathers Group has an open, classically vintage style that could be pulled straight from a 20′s broadsheet. Beautiful execution.

Pointless Corp uses a blend of retro elements, most notably the typography and vintage ad style characters to create a feeling of yesteryear throughout the design.

Amazee Labs colorfully recreates a sense of the old days, with a vintage infographic style web design. Big, bold, and feeling old.

Tvornica Bannera pulls off something of an interesting feat. It is not often that a design featuring a robot can have a retro appeal, but this site manages the feat well.

Cup Cup Cupcakes uses soft coloring with a header that mimics the awnings of delis and malt shoppes of the old days to pull together a delicious design.

R U Hot Enuf? calls on the comic books hero styles of old to create a powerful vintage style that really packs a punch.

Jan Ploch has a very simple, minimal design with a monochromatic color palette which all gets it’s retro feel from the site header.

Atticus Pet Design Studio uses various vintage design elements, together with a whimsical mascot image that lands in the old school camp.

Paper Damsels wonderfully combines pinks and greys to craft a very elegant, almost Victorian era feeling design for their site.

Smultron has a deep orange background with a black and white, 20′s style character giving the entire site the feel of an old advertisement.

The Journal of Min Tran uses a retro color scheme and classic feeling header to bring together a very simple, yet attractive design.

Five Thirty Brew combines an advanced, fluid design with retro styled colors and elements for a playfully, informative website.

Bright Bulb Design Studio is a site that you have probably seen before, but it’s awesome vintage design was one that we just couldn’t ignore.

Silky Szeto has an interesting, very old school design, full of various bold fonts tightly packed together like some of the vintage advertisements of yesteryear.

Bitfoundry has a simple, retro design which gets its throwback feel from the bold, clean typography and softly colored elements.

Tommy has such a harmonious blending of vintage elements that it was another that the showcase would not feel complete without.

Hipstery does a good job of employing a range of various elements with an old school 70′s and earlier era feel, however the overly busy background can be a bit hard on the eyes at times.

Simple as Milk is another minimal, yet retro styled design, which relies heavily on the typography to impart this feel. The thick scripted site header shines in this respect.

Reklama-Audio draws on 1940′s era Americana styling for their website design, and it pulls all the elements together with class.

Mom & Popcorn is another flawless blending of so many vintage styled design elements, layered to perfection in such a way that it embodies the very essence of this showcase.

Using Retro Style Images And Banners For Advertising

Retro style images and pop art graphics like those of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol is a popular style adopted by graphic designers for web and print design. They are chic, fashionable, eye-catching and add to the ‘cool’ factor of the company and its products. Lots of stock images are available for download which can be used for web designing, however if you want something unique or customized it’s better to grab a pencil and paper and do it yourself.

Step 1: Visualize the layout

If you are designing a website, it is important that you choose the image while constructing the wireframe as it should fit your overall layout accordingly. Have a look at some examples to get an idea. It is popular to use them like banners or as full body depiction which encompasses the entire page. Some examples are below

Tagetscope retro layout

Step 2: Sketch

Once you have decided on the layout, its time to work on the image. Start with a few pencil sketches and try to capture the essence of the product. In this case my client was a mobile app company, so I decided to create an image of a lady displaying a standard touch screen mobile phone. To make sure that the original product gets the deserved attention I decided to sketch the lady and use a real phone image so that it remains highlighted and looks like a fun combination as well.

Retro image sketch

Step 3: Scan

Photocopy the pencil sketch so that the original sketch is preserved and can be re-used later. In this step you can either scan the sketch and add the details digitally (like details of hairstyle, dress etc) using Photoshop and a Wacom device, or if you feel more comfortable on paper, try to sketch the details on the photocopy and then scan it.

scan retro image

Step 4: Digitally enhance

Once you are satisfied with the scan, open it with Photoshop (or a similar editor) and plug-in your Wacom (or similar device). First use the magic wand tool in Photoshop to select as much area as possible from the image and save the structure in a new layer. Now use the pen tool to select around a shape and copy on a new layer. Finally use the brush tool and with careful movements of the Wacom pen add finishing touches to the image.

a. Using the magic wand tool to select and copy areas from the scanned image, and reconstruct them on a different layer (say layer2)

magic wand on retro image

b. Zoom and use the pen tool to copy the finer details on layer 2

pen tool on retro image

c. Use the brush to reconstruct the details on layer 2.

brush tool on retro image

Step 5: Integrate

Add the mobile phone (or any other product) to the image and adjust the size and contrast of the image for smooth integration. Add the entire image to the banner or the web layout. Try a few different backgrounds to see what works best.

Retro Inspiration

Advertise here with BSA

Retro is a word that derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning “backwards” or “in past times”. I think extremely interesting that we look back and get inspired by designs produced a while back, or even some recent ones that use the retro style. Since Friday is always a good day to relax and browse some inspiring images, we decided to gather a list with retro inspiration to show you.

Thanks to ISO50, my number one source for retro inspiration, I discovered two amazing Flickr galleries: Advertising Hitchcock and Eric Carl. These guys have so many beautiful and inspiring retro images that I decided to gather some examples to share with you. It’s really good to pay attention to the images and notice typography, colors and shapes, this can be indeed pretty inspiring.

Free Texture Tuesday: Retro Wallpaper Difference Clouds

For this week, I’ve got some retro wallpaper textures with a twist. I took pictures of some vintage wallpaper designs, inverted them and rendered difference clouds, then applied a small amount of lighting. These would probably work nicely as a low opacity overlay to add a little more texture to a background that already exists but needs a little more spice. Hope you put them to good use. (You can click on the images and get the full size ones from Flickr)

50 Retro and Vintage Web Designs to Inspire You

Last week, Henry posted an article with 30 Fonts Perfect for Vintage and Retro Style Design and I simply loved the first font of the list, the matchbook typefaces. By the time I saw it I could think of several good ways to use it in web design, print design on even other ways. I was so inspired that I decided to do a selection of retro and vintage websites for our weekly web design inspirational post.

I really like retro and vintage stuff… websites, posters, print, adds, everything. I think it’s amazing how an ‘old style’ still get our attention and appreciation. For this selection of retro and vintage web designs, you will see retro and vintage elements, fonts, images, colors, textures, etc. I hope you enjoy the selection. And of course, if you have a cool retro/vintage site to share with us, the comments are open.

Collection Of 40 Best Carefully Hand Picked Retro Designs

Nowadays, more and more people are creating variety of modern designs, but there are people who are attracted by the retro designs. Basically retro is a term used to describe, denote or classify culturally outdated or aged trends, fashion, or fashion, from the overall post-modern past, but have since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. Website retro design is rare, so it took me a lot of time until I made this collection. I divided this article into 2 parts, so in my opinion, most attractive websites are from 1-19. What do you think? Which one is your favorite the most creative pick?

1. Targetscope

This website is mainly attracting by the fact that it is made with flash assistance. I love scope effect, paper scrolling, airplane shadow and of course music in the background.

targetscope-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

2. Level 2 Design

Very beautifully made airplane and car. Very nice looking retro style clock. You can also activate the radio. Don’t forget to move your mouse on the ad pole.

level-2-design-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

3. Media BOOM

The main thing here is that you can choose day or night mode. In the day mode you will find a very well designed city and view. You can see a fuming chimney and flowing U.S. flag. When you switch to night, then you will see a signboard with word ”METROPOLITAN”. I really like the letter ”A”, because it seems that it has a lack of electricity. Of course, there is also music in the background.

4. Sensi Soft

The first thing that comes in mind is the large advertising pole in the middle of the screen. On the bottom of the advertising pole you can see a perfectly erected arrows, and if you move your mouse on top of ”ABOUT US”, then you’ll see how smoothly everything goes. In the background there are animated flying birds, drayman, Newspaper and fly-away England Flag.

5. Casino Lemonade

I think that angel highlights this site very well.

casino-lemonade-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

6. Prospect Denim

This website is perfection. There is music and bird sound in the background. Animated truck, wind generator, mailbox and animated buttons makes this website balanced.

prospect-denim-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

7. Thunder Fuel

This website is my number 1 choice, because it is simple and almost everything is based on sound. So, quite a funny question, but would you like to hear how does a short circuit sound? If yes, then quickly move the mouse vertically on hosted websites. Also, I think button sound is good and do not forget to click on ”Launch”.

thunder-fuel-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

8. Germville

I mainly chosed this site simply because I love animated city. I think that it is the perfect supplement to a very retro design background.

germville-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

9. Turbo Chef

PERFECT intro with amazing sounds! Nothing else to say except that you must focus that this website is different from the others by the fact that the website itself is not retro, but the product they advertise is. You should also look for all kinds of parts, as most are done in modern and contemporary style. Here are very, very many options, so check them carefully.

turbo-chef-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

10. Custom Design

Everything is made on the television screen. Basic options: brightness adjuster, sound regulator, fullscreen mode, ability to skip movies, option to switch on/off the TV. You can also play with the big button on the TV in the upper right corner.

custom-design-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

11. Big Rig Design

I chosed this site because it has very well highlighted buttons.

big-rig-creative-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

12. Devotchka

Everything in flash. Loading screen is loking good. Great animation in the beginning. Music in the background.

devotcha-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

13. Miss Havisham’s Attic

Animated pixie, clock and switching pictures inside picture frame.

miss-havisham-attic-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

14. Big State Games

Very nice sounding song in the background, a wide variety of animation… what more can you wish for?

big-state-games-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

15. Fred Perry

This website focus is placed on the background. I do love it and like the old look. As always, there are different effects.

fred-perry-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

16. Visual Media Group

Finally, I also found a Latvian made homepage. This is incredible, I even didn’t knew that I would ever find something like this. This website is incredible, just take look yourself. Starting from a variety of text effects, ending with an animated view. This is a must see!

visual-media-group-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

17. Repiso

I chosed this retro design because it has a modern undertone. Moving the mouse, you’ll see moving mosquito. There are also some effects.

repiso-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

18. No Limit

I like this website, because they have include a flash animation of the cube that turns into 3 parts.

no-limit-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

19. Restaurant L’unita

Yet something unseen. When the page loads, you can see a wine pouring effect. Below is a cafe, which has a wide variety of flash animations. Watches, paintings, a lamp, telephone, a glass of wine, a statue, logo, etc. When you slide the mouse over the buttons, you will see circling star. There is also music in the background.

lunita-collection-of-best-hand-picked-retro designs

Unfortunately, the collection of these 19 flash sites ends. Next, you’ll see the ordinary, but attractive designs. The reason is that I wanted to build a larger article.

Many designers and artists have a true love for vintage and retro design and share their passion when the opportunity arises. One could probably find several hundred showcases of retro designs on display today in the 21st century, but not many of actual vintage ones that were used in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s and are still in use today.

To celebrate the beauty of vintage and retro typography, we have compiled a showcase of vintage and retro signage to inspire you: a great excuse to take five minutes out to admire the styles, whether simple or complex, and the love that went into creating these gorgeous vintage signs.

A South Street icon bites the dust. At least the new shop left the giant creepy ants on the facade. And there is Crash, Bang, Boom — a very respectable spin-off shop, around the corner. Philadelphia, PA.

Collage is the combination of pieces of diverse materials and media, such as newspaper, magazines, package labels, fabric, paint and photographs, into one composition. The term itself derives from the French “coller,” meaning “glue.” It was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso at the beginning of the 20th century, when collage became a distinct part of modern art.

Collage promises to be an important creative outlet for many years to come because it allows artists to explore and experiment with creating truly new, exciting and often unexpected results. This article showcases the pioneers of the collage movement, current trends and examples, contemporary proponents of collage and a wealth of resources. Please feel free to use the comments area to suggest other collages or artists you like.

Pioneers

Pablo Picasso

Early in 1912, Picasso created “Still Life with Chair Caning” (above) by attaching a piece of oilcloth with a caning pattern to an oval-shaped painting. It is said to be the first “modern” collage; however, the claim is not definitive, because George Braque was developing a technique using papier collé in the same year.

George Braque

Georges Braque developed paper collage (papier collé) using shreds of mixed media to produce the effect of actual paint, layered on the canvas with paint later being added. He first used this technique in his 1912 painting, Fruitdish and Glass (above).

Kurt Schwitters

A collage by German Dada and surrealist artist Kurt Schwitters entitled “Das Undbild” from 1919. Schwitters was famous for his collages, called “Merz Pictures,” in which he attempted to make coherent artistic sense of the world around him using fragments of found objects.

Eduardo Paolozzi

Paolozzi is regarded as the father of pop art in Britain. This piece, “I Was a Rich Man’s Plaything” from 1947, is considered the earliest standard-bearer of pop art. It was created from different pieces of commercially printed paper stuck to a single piece of card.

Henri Matisse

Late in his career, Matisse began to work increasingly with cut paper. He used sheets of paper washed over with gouache colors and then cut out his shapes and stuck them together, as shown above in a collage entitled “The Snail” from 1953.

Robert Rauschenberg

Most famous for his “Combines” series of collages (1954 to 1962), Rauschenberg extended the conventions of collage and found objects and incorporated trash and interesting urban debris, such as bottles, clocks, radios, clothing, wire and newspaper, into his work.

Richard Hamilton

Created in 1956 for the catalog of an exhibition in London, “Just What Is It that Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing?” was the first work of pop art (or indeed collage) to achieve iconic status. It consists of images taken mainly from American magazines and advertisements.

Romare Bearden

Bearden truly embraced the collage technique, because the layered, fragmented form allowed him to freely combine ideas, shapes and cultural references in a modern and accessible way. “The Calabash” (above) of 1970 is perhaps his most famous collage.

Current Trends

Now let’s take a closer look at current trends and examples. As you browse through the collages in this showcase, you may notice these trends:

Vintage
Jackcatcurio in Get Creative With Collage: Trends and Inspiration
The use of vintage images, advertisements and materials is perhaps the biggest trend in collages today. Many collage artists take inspiration from vintage art because of its unique style and beauty.

Mixed media
Collageaday in Get Creative With Collage: Trends and Inspiration
Mixed media is simply the use of other media, such as paint, in a collage. Common media include pencil drawings, paints, pastels, charcoals and markers.

Advertising and slogans

Not surprisingly, slogans, branding and advertising play a major part in many of the collages featured here. Consumer culture has become a major force since its appearance in collages in the late 1940s.

Retro
Louisixteen in Get Creative With Collage: Trends and Inspiration
Retro iconography and imagery have experienced a resurgence in collage, because their style is so distinctive from today’s culture and art.

Urban
GabriLeCabri in Get Creative With Collage: Trends and Inspiration
“Found collage” relies heavily on urban wall art, such as torn posters, ads, paint, markers and signs. It is growing in popularity, partly because of artists such as Nick Riggio, who creates urban collage paintings.
