iStockphoto Launches New Logo & Rebrands to iStock

Fresh off the heels of a much larger company rebranding themselves, the folks over at iStock rolled out their new logo and rebrand today. The word “photo” was removed and they are now officially known as iStock.

They also clearly want the world to know that they are part of the Getty family by adding “by Getty Images” as their tagline. Getty acquired the Calgary, Alberta-based company back in 2006 for $50 million. Apparently many of their customers still didn’t know this.

The new logo was designed by Michael C. Place of Build based in London. The new rebrand seems to be a simplified yet stronger approach from the previous 8 year old logo with the camera icon. Dropping the “photo” from the brand also reflects their larger offering of vectors, illustrations, videos and audio files as well.

The redesign isn’t a complete surprise. To anyone who’s been paying attention, they’ve had their Twitter and Facebook vanity urls branded as iStock for a long time now. It was just a matter of time before we finally were able to see the new branding.

While the logo is unimpressive, it makes sense. However, my biggest pet peeve with it is that they are keeping the trademark and putting it in the most awkward spot.

What is the point? Getty Images is known for having an aggressive legal team to enforce their content (unlike their competitor) so you would think their legal team can enforce their trademark even if it’s not on their logo. Maybe Jonathan Klein should have a chat with Marissa Mayer?

As long as they don’t put an exclamation point on it, I think it will be just fine. What do you think? Would you have designed it differently? Feel free to voice your opinion in the comments below.

Why Are They Giving Away Promo Codes?
Many online retailers will argue that promo codes do not add incremental value to a business – only eat away at the margin and taking revenue out of the cart. It would be easy to assume that giving a customer a promo code would cause them to buy the same amount but at a lower price.

However, after discussing this with one of iStock’s marketing managers they tell us their research shows the complete opposite. “People tend to take advantage of the savings by spending even more on their order than they previously would without a coupon” said Blair DeJong, Marketing Manager for Getty Images and iStockphoto.

He continued “Based on our findings, we have established that coupons do add incremental value to the business and are, in fact, necessary to acquire new customers and retain loyal, existing customers.”

That is something we’re excited to hear. We will continue to update this page each month as new codes become available. In the meantime please feel free to leave a comment below and let us know how much you saved.
